Usually, everyone has a different definition of sushi. A California roll that costs only a few dollars is considered sushi, while an 'Omakase' that costs $100 or even $200 per person is also sushi. These two definitions are difficult to overlap because they cater to different consumer groups. As a sushi enthusiast, whenever I crave a bit of ceremony, I drive to Manhattan and spend hundreds of dollars experiencing what appear to be professional sushi restaurants. However, most of the time, the results are average, with occasional surprises and disappointments. I understand that price does not always equate to quality. When I'm at home, I also order some food from ordinary sushi restaurants, like California rolls. My kids enjoy them a lot, and I have no objections. They are simple yet satisfying. What surprised me about Mikawa is that the quality of its food is exceptionally high, comparable to the professional-looking restaurants I mentioned earlier. For example, when I tasted the tuna nigiri, I could tell that, despite the different styles, they were of the same caliber. (This may be related to their use of bluefin tuna, which is typically found in high-end restaurants.) The rice is short-grain and always warm, not cold, so I have reason to believe this. They strictly control this process. For good sushi, the rice temperature should be close to body temperature, while the fish temperature should be close to room temperature. I believe this is knowledge that every sushi enthusiast should be aware of, and Mikawa excels in this aspect. Therefore, I am very put off by those who serve sashimi on crushed ice. This is a very low-grade practice. Excessively cold temperatures prevent people from experiencing the different flavors of various fish, and the remnants of crushed ice ruin the taste of the sashimi. I absolutely would not pay extra for these ice decorations, even though they may look aesthetically pleasing. In addition to differences in ingredients and styles, the quality of the food and the skill level of the sushi chefs are also top-notch. This is why their California rolls and other dishes stand out. They use high-level craftsmanship to elevate ordinary food and attract customers at affordable prices. I believe this is their strategy.

Ordered the sushi combo for takeout. Price is very affordable! At $27 for 9 piece nigiri and a regular roll. It's one of the rare places that allows you to pick what pieces you wanted for the nigiri and there's a good selection. I tried a few different fish out and enjoyed all of them. I couldn't really tell what was what tho. Special shout out to the scallop, that was chefs kiss. I got the bluefin tuna roll and that was also delicious. All the fish were delicious and fresh. The only problem was the nigiri size... they were so tiny. It was like half the size of a regular nigiri. They're children sized nigiri pieces. Very very small pieces. But the fish was so delicious and fresh and price is affordable... I was really shocked at the nigiri size. The combo also comes with a choice of soup or salad. I got the salad and the dressing was delicious. It was nice ginger dressing. Overall: very delicious meal, but order more food because portion size is very small. Wish the nigiri pieces were bigger but I guess it's already so affordable already.

The sushi is really super fresh, this has to be one of the best sushi I've ever had, very few sushi restaurants in the area offer such fresh Bluefin tuna, and the beef teriyaki is also pretty good.

The best sushi in Bay Ridge, OToro, A5 Wagyu, King Crab, Uni, very fresh, short grain rice made sushi, absolutely professional, 5 stars recommended.

I don't know of any other sushi joint that lets the customer choose each of nine individual pieces of nigiri in a sushi combo. The pieces might not be the most substantial I've ever seen, but the fish is at the peak of freshness, and the special wasabi is a revelation. The prices are really good too, as is the speed of delivery (via UberEats, on which Mikawa is constantly running two-for-one specials). The fresh fruit iced teas are also excellent, and the dessert selection, albeit Western-heavy, is more extensive than most Japanese restaurants I have seen; I recommend anything chocolate. I don't live anywhere close to this restaurant, but it has become my go-to.

I swear Bay Ridge is a hidden gem for excellent sushi. Bay Ridge is a hidden gem in general!! The workers were incredibly sweet, all smiles and super attentive throughout our meal. Their menu was honestly so overwhelming, because they can literally make any kind of Japanese style food. They must have understood this as they gave us some time before coming over. We got 2 of their combos. The Lunch Sushi Combo ($15.95) involved 5 pcs of sushi, and 1 sushi roll, with a choice of soup or salad. There was a decent selection of fish to choose from, and the White Tuna and Red Snapper we had were both so fresh and delicious! The Any 3 Roll Lunch ($12.95) was also an amazing deal. We had a hard time choosing again from the ABUNDANT selections. The Eel Avocado had more avocado than eel, but it was still delicious and saucey. The Yellowtail Scallion was wrapped in nori, forcing them into tiny pieces, but they were still so light and creamy. The Spicy White Tuna Avocado was different from what we usually ate, and we gobbled that one right up! Not spicy and super flavorful! The reviews highlighted the Black Pearl Roll ($15.95), and being first in the Chef's Specials list, we of course had to try. This roll was heavy, given the use of fried shrimp tempura inside, but again, very well made and so unique! I enjoyed the yuzu miso sauce for a slightly tart taste, with the scallop to lay the cherry on top. More people need to visit this amazing sushi spot more. With great value, an impressive variety, and friendly staff, I'd totally come again.
